The five-minute tailored resume: a repeatable routine

Tailoring works. The reason people do not do it is time: rewriting a resume for every posting is exhausting. The routine below takes about five minutes once your base resume is solid, and it is the same five minutes every time.

Minute one: read the posting for priorities

Skim the responsibilities and requirements and mark the three things that appear first or most often. Those are the priorities the hiring manager wrote the posting around. Everything else is secondary.

Minute two: fix the headline and summary

Change your headline to match the posting's title if it is honest (a 'Marketing Manager' can be a 'Growth Marketing Manager'). In the summary, make sure the three priorities are addressed in the first two sentences, with a number where you have one.

Minute three: reorder bullets

In your two most recent roles, move the bullets that speak to the priorities to the top. Do not write new bullets yet; reordering alone changes what a reader sees first.

Minute four: swap terminology

Find the posting's exact phrases for skills and tools and use them where they are true. 'Customer retention' becomes 'churn reduction' if that is what the posting says. This is where AI tailoring earns its keep: it does the swap across the whole document without changing the facts.

Minute five: run the scanner and save a copy

Scan the result against the posting. Fix anything flagged as missing if it is true of you. Save the version with the company name so you can see exactly what you sent when they call.

Why the base resume matters

This routine assumes a strong base: quantified bullets, a clear structure and a parser-friendly template. Invest an afternoon in the base once, and every tailored version becomes a five-minute edit rather than a rewrite.
