How AI interview coaching works, and how to get the most from it

AI interview tools come in two forms: mock interviews you practise with in advance, and live assistants that run alongside a real call. Both rely on the same three pieces — a job description, your resume and a language model — and knowing that helps you use them well.

Mock interviews

The tool reads the posting and your resume, generates questions a real interviewer for that role would ask, then evaluates each answer against a rubric: relevance, structure (situation, task, action, result for behavioural questions), specificity and confidence of language. The feedback includes a model answer built from your own experience so you can see the gap.

The value is in repetition. One session tells you which answers ramble or lack a result; three sessions over a week fix them. Record yourself answering aloud; typing is convenient but interviews are spoken.

Live assistants

A live assistant transcribes the interviewer through your browser, detects questions, and shows a short suggested answer and key points. It works best as a prompt for what you already know — a reminder of the project or number to mention — rather than as a script to read. Reading from a screen is noticeable and slows you down.

Preparation still matters

Both tools are only as good as the resume and job description you feed them. Spend ten minutes making sure the resume attached to the session has the projects and numbers you want to talk about; the suggestions will draw on them.

Etiquette

Live assistance sits in a grey area for some employers. Treat it as you would prepared notes: check the interviewer's guidance, and never let it replace your own thinking. Interviewers hire people, not answer sheets, and the tools work best when they make your own answers clearer.

A simple practice plan

• Three days out: a mock session at medium difficulty, mixed questions.
• Two days out: rewrite your three weakest answers using the model answers as a guide.
• One day out: a hard session, aloud, timed.
• Interview day: notes or a live assistant open, but your own words.
