How employers use AI in hiring, and what it means for your application
A plain explanation of applicant tracking systems, AI screening and what actually gets a resume through.

Nearly every mid-sized and large employer runs applications through an applicant tracking system (ATS), and a growing number add AI-based ranking on top. Knowing what these systems do — and do not do — takes most of the mystery out of why applications go unanswered.
What an ATS does
It stores applications, parses resumes into fields (name, roles, dates, skills), and lets recruiters search and filter. The parsing step is where most problems happen: two-column layouts, tables and text in images can scramble the data, so a strong candidate appears weak or incomplete.
What AI screening adds
Some systems score or rank applicants against the job description using keyword matching or language models. These scores usually decide the order in which a recruiter reads applications, not whether they are read at all. Being ranked lower means being read later, which matters when a posting closes after a few hundred applications.
What actually helps
- A parser-friendly layout: single column, standard headings, real text.
- The posting's own terms for skills and titles, used where they are true.
- Quantified bullets: numbers survive summarisation and stand out to both software and people.
- Applying early: most postings receive the majority of applications in the first week.
What does not help
Keyword stuffing in white text, cramming every skill from the posting into a list, or generic applications sent at volume. Modern systems and recruiters both detect these, and the second stage — a person reading the resume — is where they fail.
Where humans still decide
A recruiter or hiring manager reads every resume that gets an interview. AI systems shape the order of the queue; people make the decision. The practical goal is to be near the top of the queue and to make sense to a human within ten seconds.
How this product fits
The resume builder and scanner are built around these mechanics: parser-friendly templates, keyword matching against the actual posting, and feedback on bullets. Auto Apply submits tailored documents through the employer's normal form, exactly as a person would.
